Moving From World of Warcraft to Eve Online

If you have played World of Warcraft for a while, moving to another mmorpgs does not seem to offer anything major in change. They all seem to be based on some fantasy theme, with drawfs, elves and dragons. The classes are all based on three basic types, fighter, caster and healer. The mobs you have to kill always seem to include orcs and dragons.
wow-and-eve-marketEven the space based mmorpgs, such star wars, or anarchy online, do offer a non fantasy based theme, they still share a similar setup in terms of leveling. You gain experience points by killing monsters or npcs, which enable you to level once you acquire a certain number of experience points.

However, Eve Online by an Icelandic company called CCP, goes against this cookie cutter approach. It is a space based mmorpg, where there is no control of character movement on the ground, instead your game time is spent in the confines of a space ship. If you are old enough to remember Elite by David Braben, then think of Elite being online, in a persistent universe.

Also it is a single universe, where all eve online subscribers join, so it is a vast universe. This is unlike wow, where there are many game world servers. Even on a highly populated server, the number on players at peak times does not exceed more than 3000, any more, wow starts to suffer from lag.

The eve servers use state of the art hardware, that allows a much greater number of simultaneous players to be online at the same time. The record being 50,000.

Eve Online is also a better option for the casual player. Leveling in eve does not mean endless grinding killing npcs or doing quests to gain experience points, instead it is time based. That is, you choose a skill to level, and that skill becomes available to you over time. Depending on the skill level, this can vary from minutes to days.

But you do not have to logged into the game for the skill to advance, you can be offline, and the skill will be ready for you, once it has reached the allotted time, when you log back in. This is major bonus for players who do not have much time to play a mmorpg, but still want to play one. So Eve Online, attracts a great number of older players who are busy during the day with work or family commitments.

At a basic level, the economics of wow and eve are similar. Gatherers in wow obtain raw materials such as metal ore or animal skins, which are then turned into goods by trade professions. This are then sold on the auction house, and depending on the rarity of the item made, sold for a good profit.

Eve production also involves gathering raw materials, ore, with mining capable ships, that extract ore from asteroids. Like wow, the types of ore vary from zone to zone, with the more exclusive ore only available in dangerous hotspots. But to efficiently mine in eve, and make big bucks, requires a well organised group. With one or two members, actually doing the mining, another player in dps capable ship, to ward of pirates, both npc and actual players, and a finally a ship to ferry the mined ore from the mined ship to a local station for storage.

For selling items, in eve, although auctioning is available, the majority of trading occurring at trade depots in space stations. This means that the price of an item varies from system to system, and because some materials or items are common in one part of the universe but rare in another, the prices can vary considerably . Indeed, there many Eve players who start their empire just by transporting goods from one system to another, buying low and selling high.

Eve also offers a lot more diversity than wow in the role you play. Unlike wow, there is no class to choose that limits you to a particular play style. Your role is defined by your skillset, and if you have played eve long enough, you can play all the basic archetypes, the eve equivalents of tank, healer or dps with same character.

For pvp, Eve is like a free-for-all or open pvp server. Where any player can attack any other player. However, there are repercussions. The repercussions depends on where the attack was made. Each solar system has a security level from 0.0 to 1.0. If you attack someone in high security, concord, the galactic police force will soon turn your ship into a melted heap. However, in the lower security zones, concord has less of an influence, so your free to attack anyone you like.

However, in the low security space, are where pirates roam. These are players or player gangs who spend all their time roaming low sec space for likely targets, typically noobs. If your not attacked by pirate, you may have ventured into a system controlled by player corporation, the equivalent of wow guilds.

Yes, in eve, guilds can own their own corner of the galaxy that they will diligently defend with player built structures, such as space stations, or expand their territory should they desire.

So eve also offers a much greater challenge for guilds, rather than just getting a raid together and entering a dungeon.

This article was designed to help make a comparison between eve and wow, rather than a complete introduction to eve. So we have only touched on all the features in eve, but hopefully there is enough covered to least try out eve if your tired of the playing the typical mmorpg game over and over again.
